I always saw sorcerers as a draw for the perennial underaged player: magic missile x4, flaming sphere x4, fireball x3. but all of the bonii of magic-users without the Big Book of Every-Eight-Hours and all those scribing material costs? Heh. If it was a racially-limited prestige (draconian or dragonkin), I could understand. On the flip side, I've -never- cottoned to the idea of Sorcererness. how else to pull off the Parlor Trick to end all parlor tricks than through flared cerulean sleeves? My illusionists have always worn blue, however.

Of course, one could argue that magic-users technically have access to much of the bounty of the class, glamers and illusions and such. The biggest bonus, in my opinion, is that the illusionist is readily accessible to the novice player in that most real-life prestidigitators can be classified as 'illusionists' rather than true magicians. where traditional magic-users fling fireballs and magic missiles to put the beat-down on 'em, the illusionist seeks to sway or mystify or mislead: meat and drink for the avid roleplayer.

but I have come to see that the Illusionist is actually, the way I see it, more of a conceptual way to run a traditional magic-user: paired with certain other classes, individually (ie: multiclassed gnome thief) or by companion (eg: support for melee folk and traditional casters), they can be the specialist-in-the-spotlight.
